Your spend good money and buy yourself a beautiful, natural, handmade bar of bath soap because you’ve been hearing or experienced for yourself its amazing benefits for your skin and health. You get home and you can’t wait to get in the shower try it out, but there are a few things you should know about your new bar of soap to help you get the best out of it and get your money’s worth.
First, just because a bar of soap is natural does not mean that you cannot be allergic or react to it, if you have an allergy to an oil used to make the soap for example, you will most likely have a negative reaction to the soap. The first thing I suggest is doing a skin test. Choose a small sensitive are on your skin such as the inner part of your arm, wet your skin and and rub the soap on it enough to work a bit of lather. Rinse the soap off and wait at least a few hours and check for any redness or skin irritation. If there is no reaction, you can begin using your soap normally. However, if there is any redness or irritation you might be allergic to something in the soap and you shouldn’t use it.
A natural bar of handmade soap contains nothing but pure oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter etc… It is true that in order to make soap you must also use Lye aka Sodium Hydroxide, but after saponification (the reaction of mixing an acid and a base together to form soap) and a 4-6 week curing process, there is no lye remaining in the soap. Organic herbs, essential oils and other natural ingredients can add more benefits such as healing (calendula herb for example) and soothing and calming (Lavender). Because there are no preservatives used in your natural soap, you have to take extra care to make it last longer.
When you are not using your soap to shower or bathe with, make sure to keep in a dry location such as a well draining soap dish. Avoid leaving the soap where water will be running over it and washing it away. Do not leave your soap bar in sitting water because it will get soft and melt.
Many people have told me that they prefer to use certain of my bath soaps just for their face because that is a problem area for them, either because of acne or other skin issues, and they like that the soap helps and they want it to last. It is perfectly fine to do this, but also know that just like any other soap you’ve used before, a natural bar of soap can be used all over to cleanse your skin and even your hair. So, feel free to enjoy your new soap bar everyday, for all of your bath needs.
When you’ve purchased a truly natural bar of soap from an honest vendor, you can feel good knowing that what you are putting on your skin and into your body is better for your health because you know what is in it and there is no worry of future complications or side effects.
